SALZBURG=MOZART International Chamber Music Competition in Tokyo 2024

 

Purpose

Enlightenment and spread of the artistry of piano and chamber music

Divisions

1. Piano Solo division – 《Live performance》 or 《Video entry via YouTube》 

  There will be preliminary rounds for both formats

2. Chamber Music division – 《Live performance》 or 《Vide entry via YouTube》 

  No preliminary rounds for either format

Awards

◆ Grand prize (Given to one entry from all categories) – One hundred thousand Japanese yen (¥100,000)

◆ Plaque (first through third place), Opportunities to perform nationally and internationally and will be given financial assistance on travel expenses and monetary compensation for the performance

*Past opportunities include 「Winner’s Concert in Mozart House」in Vienna, Austria, 「Salzburger Schlosskonzerte Mirabell」 in Salzburg Austria,「Mai Festival」in Rellingen, Germany,「Summer String Institute」in Texas, the United States, 「Salzburg=Mozart International Chamber Music Competition in Tokyo Winners’ Concert」in New York, 「YAMAHA Salon Concert Series」 in Tokyo, Monthly concert series in Hokkaido, Japan, Concert series produced by the Arts Spread.

*Performance opportunities and dates will be determined by the performers and organizer of each event. Arts Spread does not guarantee all of the aforementioned events to take place. 

 

Preliminary round
(Piano solo division only)

All divisions and entry formats are eligible to receive the above-mentioned awards.

There is a preliminary round for only the Piano Solo division; however, this round will be conducted with video entries for all the applicants regardless of their entry format.

Deadline to apply :
・Piano Solo division – February 18, 2024
   Video entry for the preliminary round – February 21, 2024

・Piano division qualifier announcement date – February 26, 2024
   The deadline for final entry fee – February 29, 2024
 There is no preliminary rounds for Chamber Music division.

Competition is open to public. Admission fee: 1,000 Japanese yen per day per person

Instrumentation/
Ensemble Format

Solo piano

Ensemble with the maximum of eight members (e.g.: String quartet, Woodwinds quintet, Woodwind(s) and piano, Piano duet, Piano trio

*Ensemble with two pianos is not allowed

Eligibility

There is no age limit to participate

Participation Fees

Solo piano category – Ten thousand Japanese yen (¥10,000) for the preliminary round, eighteen thousand Japanese yen (¥18,000) for the main round per entry

Chamber category – Twenty-eight thousand Japanese yen (¥28,000) per entry

Required Repertoire

◆ Piano Solo – both live and video-taped formats

One Mozart Piano Sonata from KV279, KV280, KV281, KV282, KV283, V284, KV309, KV310, KV311, KV330, KV331, KV332, KV333, KV457, KV533/494, KV545, KV570, KV576 (all movements) As a basic rule, please do not take repeats.

*Please play one movement of your choice for the preliminary round. If the contestant advances to the main round, the same sonata as the preliminary round must be performed.

*Memorization is not required.

◆ Chamber music – both live and video-taped formats

One or two pieces, including Mozart’s composition, up to 10 to 20 minutes total of performance time.

・ If there is no original Mozart works in a specific instrumentation, contestants may perform other composer(s)’ literature.

・ Non-original, i.e. edited, works are allowed. Instrumentation does not need to be the same as the original composition. Concertos can be played also.

・ Contestants do not need to play all movements of one composition.

◆ Other guidelines for all the contestants

・ The live performance contestants may be asked to perform certain parts of a composition on the day of final round.

・ Contestants who submit video entries may videotape movements or pieces separately; however, submission must be in one file.
